Tôi nghe như vầy:
Một thời đức Phật trú tại vườn Cấp Cô Độc, rừng cây Kỳ-đà, tại nước Xá-vệ. Bấy giờ, Thế Tôn bảo các Tỳ-kheo:
“Nếu có người thuận theo một pháp, không lìa một pháp, thì Thiên ma Ba-tuần không thể có được cơ hội, cũng không thể đến để quấy nhiễu người. Những gì là một pháp? Là công đức phước nghiệp. Vì sao vậy? Vì Ta nhớ xưa kia, dưới cây bồ-đề, cùng các Bồ-tát hội họp về một chỗ. Ác ma Ba-tuần đem hàng nghìn vạn ức binh chúng, đủ các loại tướng mạo, hình người đầu thú, không thể kể hết: Trời, Rồng, Quỷ thần, A-tu-la, Ca-lưu-la, Ma-hưu-lặc v.v... đều đến tụ hội.”
Lúc ấy Ma Ba-tuần nói với Ta rằng:
“Sa-môn, mau gọp mình sát đất.”
Phật dùng sức lớn phước đức hàng phục ma oán, mọi trần cấu đều tiêu, không uế nhiễm, liền thành đạo vô thượng chánh chơn.
“Các Tỳ-kheo nên quán sát nghĩa này. Tỳ-kheo đầy đủ công đức, ác ma Ba-tuần không thể có được cơ hội để phá hoại công đức kia.”
Bấy giờ, Thế Tôn liền nói kệ này:
Có phước khoái lạc,
Vô phước thì khổ;
Đời này, đời sau,
Tạo phước thọ lạc.
“Cho nên các Tỳ-kheo, tạo phước chớ mệt mỏi.”
Các Tỳ-kheo sau khi nghe những gì Phật dạy, hoan hỷ phụng hành.
聞如是：
一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨 T 0565c15園。
爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「若有承順一法，不 T 0565c16離一法，魔波旬不能得其便，亦不能來 T 0565c17觸嬈人。云何為一法？謂功德福業。所以然 T 0565c18者，自憶往昔在道樹下，與諸菩薩集在一 T 0565c19處，弊魔波旬將諸兵眾數千萬億，種種形貌， T 0565c20獸頭人身不可稱計，天、龍、鬼、神、阿須倫、迦留 T 0565c21羅、摩休勒等，皆來運集。
「時，魔波旬而語我 T 0565c22言：『沙門速投于地！』佛以福德大力，降伏魔 T 0565c23怨，諸塵垢消，無有諸穢，便成無上正真道。 T 0565c24諸比丘！當觀此義，其有比丘功德具足者， T 0565c25弊魔波旬不能得其便，壞其功德。」
爾時，世 T 0565c26尊便說此偈：

「有福快樂， 無福者苦， 今世後世， T 0565c28
為福受樂。
T 0565c29「是故，諸比丘！為福莫惓。」
爾時，諸比丘聞佛 T 0566a01所說，歡喜奉行。
T 0566a02 SC 1Thus I have heard: One time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Jeta’s Grove of Śrāvastī.
SC 2It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks, “If someone accepts one thing and doesn’t part with one thing, then Māra the Wicked One won’t be able to get an advantage over them. He won’t be able to come and harass them, either. What is that one thing? It’s virtuous, meritorious deeds. Why is that?
SC 3“I recall in the past when I was sitting under the tree of awakening with the bodhisattvas who had gathered in one place. Deceitful Māra the Wicked One led an army numbering in the hundreds of thousands of millions. His soldiers had all sorts of indescribable forms with animal heads and human bodies. The gods, nāgas, yakṣas, asuras, garuḍas, and mahoragas all came and assembled.
SC 4“Māra the Wicked One then said to me, ‘Ascetic, I’ll quickly throw you to the ground!’ But the Buddha defeated that Māra foe with merit, virtue, and great power. His impurities being extinguished and having no defilement, he then achieved the unsurpassed and true awakening.
SC 5“Monks, one should contemplate the meaning of this. Deceitful Māra the Wicked One can’t find an advantage over a monk who has perfected his virtue, nor can he ruin his virtue.”
SC 6The Bhagavān then spoke in verse:
“Someone with merits is happy;
Someone lacking merits will suffer.
In this life and the next,
Making merit brings happiness.
SC 7“Therefore, monks, don’t be cautious about making merit. [Thus, monks, you should train yourselves.]”
SC 8When the monks heard what the Buddha taught, they rejoiced and approved.
