Tôi nghe như vầy:
Một thời đức Phật trú tại vườn Cấp Cô Độc, rừng cây Kỳ-đà, nước Xá-vệ.
Bấy giờ, Thế Tôn bảo các Tỳ-kheo:
“Ở trong chúng này Ta không thấy một pháp nào đã tu, tu nhiều, mà thành hạnh địa ngục, thành hạnh súc sanh, thành hạnh ngạ quỷ; nếu sinh vào cõi người, thì hơi miệng hôi hám, làm người chán ghét: đó là nói dối vậy.
“Này các Tỳ-kheo, nếu có người nào nói dối, nói thêu dệt, gây tranh cãi phải quấy, thì liền bị đọa vào địa ngục, ngạ quỷ, súc sinh. Vì sao vậy? Vì sự nói dối ấy.
“Cho nên, này các Tỳ-kheo, phải chí thành không được nói dối.
“Như vậy, này các Tỳ-kheo, hãy học điều này.”
Các Tỳ-kheo sau khi nghe những gì đức Phật dạy, hoan hỷ phụng hành.
聞如是：
一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨 T 0576c10園。
爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「於此眾中，我不見 T 0576c11一法修行已、多修行已，成地獄行，餓鬼、畜生 T 0576c12行。若生人中，口氣臭惡，為人所憎，所謂 T 0576c13妄語。諸比丘！若有人妄言、綺語、鬪亂是 T 0576c14非，便墮畜生、餓鬼中。所以者何？以其妄語 T 0576c15故也。是故，當至誠，莫得妄語。是故，諸比 T 0576c16丘！當作是學。」
爾時，諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜 T 0576c17奉行。
T 0576c18 SC 1Thus I have heard: One time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Jeta’s Grove of Śrāvastī.
SC 2It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks, “I don’t see anything in this assembly like one thing that when cultivated and cultivated often accomplishes the actions of Hell, the actions of hungry ghosts, and the actions of animals. If they were born among humans, a person will have foul breath, and people will dislike them. What is that one thing? It’s false speech.
SC 3The Buddha told the monks, “If a person speaks falsely, uses flattery, and instigates conflicts between one group and another, they will fall into Hell, among the hungry ghosts, or among animals. Why is that? It’s because they spoke falsely.
SC 4“Therefore, monks, you should always train in being honest and not speak falsely. Thus, monks, you should train yourselves.”
SC 5When the monks heard what the Buddha taught, they rejoiced and approved.
