Tôi nghe như vầy:
Một thời đức Phật trú tại vườn Cấp Cô Độc, rừng cây Kỳ-đà, nước Xá-vệ.
Bấy giờ, Thế Tôn bảo các Tỳ-kheo:
“Ở trong chúng này Ta không thấy một pháp nào đã tu, tu nhiều, mà thành hạnh địa ngục, thành hạnh súc sanh, thành hạnh ngạ quỷ, nếu sinh vào cõi người mà thọ mạng ngắn ngủi: đó là sát sinh.
“Này các Tỳ-kheo, nếu có người nào có ý thích sát sinh, liền bị đọa vào địa ngục, ngạ quỷ, súc sinh; nếu sinh vào cõi người thì thọ mạng ngắn ngủi. Vì sao vậy? Vì họ đã dứt sinh mạng kẻ khác. Cho nên, này các Tỳ-kheo, hãy học chớ sát sinh.
“Như vậy, này các Tỳ-kheo, hãy học điều này.”
Tỳ-kheo sau khi nghe những gì đức Phật dạy, hoan hỷ phụng hành.

一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨 T 0576a15園。
爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「於是眾中，我不 T 0576a16見一法修已、多修已，成地獄行、成畜生 T 0576a17行、成餓鬼行。若生人中，受命極短，所謂 T 0576a18殺生者也。諸比丘！若有人意好殺生，便 T 0576a19墮地獄、餓鬼、畜生。若生人中，受命極短，所 T 0576a20以然者，以斷他命故。是故，當學莫殺生。 T 0576a21如是，諸比丘！當作是學。」
爾時，諸比丘聞佛 T 0576a22所說，歡喜奉行。
T 0576a23 SC 1Thus I have heard: One time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Jeta’s Grove of Śrāvastī.
SC 2It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks, “I don’t see anything in this assembly like one thing that accomplishes the actions of Hell, actions of hungry ghosts, and actions of animals when cultivated and cultivated often. If they were born among humans, a person’s life will be made quite short by it. What is that one thing? It’s the killing of beings.”
SC 3The Buddha told the monks, “If a person likes killing beings, then they’ll fall into Hell, among hungry ghosts, or among animals. If they are born among humans, their life will be made quite short by it. Why is that? Because they ended the lives of others.
SC 4“Therefore, monks, you should always be merciful and not capable of killing beings. Thus, monks, you should train yourselves.”
SC 5When the monks heard what the Buddha taught, they rejoiced and approved.
