1.1. The Serpent Sutta

Yo uppatitaṁ vineti kodhaṁ,

Visaṭaṁ sappavisaṁva osadhehi;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo rāgamudacchidā asesaṁ,

Bhisapupphaṁva saroruhaṁ vigayha;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo taṇhamudacchidā asesaṁ,

Saritaṁ sīghasaraṁ visosayitvā;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo mānamudabbadhī asesaṁ,

Naḷasetuṁva sudubbalaṁ mahogho;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo nājjhagamā bhavesu sāraṁ,

Vicinaṁ pupphamivā udumbaresu;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yassantarato na santi kopā,

Itibhavābhavatañca vītivatto;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yassa vitakkā vidhūpitā,

Ajjhattaṁ suvikappitā asesā;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo nāccasārī na paccasārī,

Sabbaṁ accagamā imaṁ papañcaṁ;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo nāccasārī na paccasārī,

Sabbaṁ vitathamidanti ñatva loke;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo nāccasārī na paccasārī,

Sabbaṁ vitathamidanti vītalobho;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo nāccasārī na paccasārī,

Sabbaṁ vitathamidanti vītarāgo;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo nāccasārī na paccasārī,

Sabbaṁ vitathamidanti vītadoso;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo nāccasārī na paccasārī,

Sabbaṁ vitathamidanti vītamoho;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yassānusayā na santi keci,

Mūlā ca akusalā samūhatāse;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yassa darathajā na santi keci,

Oraṁ āgamanāya paccayāse;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yassa vanathajā na santi keci,

Vinibandhāya bhavāya hetukappā;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇaṁ.

Yo nīvaraṇe pahāya pañca,

Anigho tiṇṇakathaṅkatho visallo;

So bhikkhu jahāti orapāraṁ,

Urago jiṇṇamivattacaṁ purāṇanti.

Uragasuttaṁ paṭhamaṁ.

SC 1SC Verse 1Who removes arisen anger
as herbs a serpent’s venom spread;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 2SC Verse 2Who lust pulls up remainderless
as in water, plants and blooms of lotuses;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 3SC Verse 3Who craving dams remainderless
as drying of a river’s fierce and rapid flow;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 4SC Verse 4Who destroys conceit entire
as a great flood a bridge of reeds so frail;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 5SC Verse 5Who in rebirths no essence finds
as a seeker of flowers on Udumbara trees;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 6SC Verse 6Who keeps no grudges inwardly
but this “being-not being” has gone beyond;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 7SC Verse 7In who do thoughts no longer smoulder,
internally curtailed, remainderless;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 8SC Verse 8Who neither goes too far nor lags behind,
all mind-proliferation gone beyond;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 9SC Verse 9Who neither goes too far nor lags behind,
who of the world has Known, “All is not thus”;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 10SC Verse 10Who neither goes too far nor lags behind,
who free of greed has Known, “All is not thus”;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 11SC Verse 11Who neither goes too far nor lags behind,
who free of lust has Known, “All is not thus”;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there

SC 12SC Verse 12Who neither goes too far nor lags behind,
who free of hate has Known, “All is not thus”;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there

SC 13SC Verse 13Who neither goes too far nor lags behind,
who delusion-free has Known, “All is not thus”;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 14SC Verse 14In whom are no latent tendencies at all—
whose roots of evil completely are expunged;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 15SC Verse 15In whom is no anxiety at all
to cause return to this existence here;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 16SC Verse 16In whom no attachment formed at all
to cause return to all existences;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
as a serpent sloughs its worn-out skin.

SC 17SC Verse 17Who’s left behind five hindrances,
serene then, crossed doubt, lacking inner barbs;
a bhikkhu such leaves here and there
