Hiriṁ tarantaṁ vijigucchamānaṁ,
Tavāhamasmi iti bhāsamānaṁ;
Sayhāni kammāni anādiyantaṁ,
Neso mamanti iti naṁ vijaññā.
Ananvayaṁ piyaṁ vācaṁ,
yo mittesu pakubbati;
Akarontaṁ bhāsamānaṁ,
parijānanti paṇḍitā.
Na so mitto yo sadā appamatto,
Bhedāsaṅkī randhamevānupassī;
Yasmiñca seti urasīva putto,
Sa ve mitto yo parehi abhejjo.
Pāmujjakaraṇaṁ ṭhānaṁ,
pasaṁsāvahanaṁ sukhaṁ;
Phalānisaṁso bhāveti,
vahanto porisaṁ dhuraṁ.
Pavivekarasaṁ pitvā,
Rasaṁ upasamassa ca;
Niddaro hoti nippāpo,
Dhammapītirasaṁ pivanti.
Hirisuttaṁ tatiyaṁ.
SC 1SC Verse 256Though this person says “I am your friend”,
nothing’s done for you as comrade would,
but bereft of conscience, e’en despising you:
as “not one of mine” this person should be known.SC 2SC Verse 257Who uses pleasant words to friends
but does not act accordingly,
wise people understand like this:
“a speaker not a doer.”SC 3SC Verse 258That one’s no friend who diligently
seeks your faults, desiring strife;
but with whom one rests, as child on breast,
is friend indeed who none can part.SC 4SC Verse 259One who causes states of joy,
who brings praiseworthy happiness,
who’s grown the Fruits’ advantages,
the human burden bears.SC 5SC Verse 260Having drunk of solitude
and tasted Peace sublime,
free from sorrow, evil-free,
one savour: Dharma’s joy.
