Tôi nghe như vầy:
Một thời đức Phật trú tại vườn Cấp cô độc, rừng cây Kỳ-đà, nước Xá-vệ. Bấy giờ đức Thế Tôn dạy chư Tỳ-kheo:
“Nên gần gũi thiện tri thức, đừng tập theo ác hành, tin vào ác nghiệp. Vì sao vậy? Chư Tỳ-kheo, gần gũi thiện tri thức, tín được tăng trưởng; văn, thí, trí huệ, hết thảy đều tăng trưởng. Nếu các Tỳ-kheo gần gũi thiện tri thức, thì không tập theo các ác hành. Vì sao vậy? Nếu gần ác tri thức, sẽ không có tín, không có giới, văn, thí, trí tuệ. Cho nên, này các Tỳ-kheo, hãy gần gũi thiện tri thức, đừng gần gũi ác tri thức. Các Tỳ-kheo, hãy học điều này như vậy.”
Các Tỳ-kheo sau khi nghe Phật thuyết pháp, hoan hỷ phụng hành.

T 0596c21 T 0596c22聞如是：
一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨 T 0596c23園。
爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「當親近善知識，莫 T 0596c24習惡行，信於惡業。所以然者，諸比丘！親 T 0596c25近善知識已，信便增益，聞、施、智慧普悉增益。 T 0596c26若比丘親近善知識，莫習惡行。所以然 T 0596c27者，若近惡知識，便無信、戒、聞、施、智慧。是故， T 0596c28諸比丘！當親近善知識，莫近惡知識。如是， T 0596c29諸比丘！當作是學。」
爾時，諸比丘聞佛所說， T 0597a01歡喜奉行。
T 0597a02 Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī, at Jetṛ’s Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park. The the Exalted One said to the monks:
“One should keep close company with a spiritual friend lest one should fall into the habit of doing evil and be convinced of the harmlessness of evil action. Thus, O monks, by keeping close with a spiritual friend one is fully convinced of one’s progress and growth in regard to the following: considerable growth in learning, generosity, insight-knowledge and wisdom. If a monk keeps close company with a spiritual friend, he will not fall into the habit of doing evil. But if he keeps company with a bad friend, he will lose trust, be wanting in moral training, in learning, insight-knowledge and wisdom. For this reason, O monks, you should keep close company with a spiritual friend and not a bad friend. Thus, O monks, you should train.”
After listening to the Buddha’s words, the monks were pleased and respectfully applied themselves to practice.
