Tôi nghe như vầy:
Một thời, Phật ở trong tinh xá Sơn cốc, thành Vương xá. Bấy giờ Tôn giả A-nan một mình ở nơi chỗ vắng, tự nghĩ như vầy: “Một nửa phạm hạnh, tức là thiện tri thức, thiện bạn đảng, thiện tùy tùng… cho đến Phật bảo A-nan:
“Phạm hạnh viên mãn, thuần nhất thanh tịnh, tức là thiện tri thức. Vì sao? Vì Ta là thiện tri thức nên khiến cho các chúng sanh tu tập chánh kiến, y viễn ly, y vô dục, y diệt, hướng đến xả… cho đến tu chánh định, y viễn ly, y vô dục, y diệt, hướng đến xả.”
Sau khi Phật nói kinh này xong, Tôn giả A-nan nghe những gì Phật đã dạy, hoan hỷ phụng hành.
如是我聞：
一時，佛住王舍城山谷精T 0200c04舍。
時，尊者阿難獨一靜處，作如是念：「半梵T 0200c05行者，謂善知識、善伴黨、善隨從。」乃至。佛告T 0200c06阿難：「純一滿淨具梵行者，謂善知識。所以T 0200c07者何？我為善知識故，令諸眾生修習正見，T 0200c08依遠離、依無欲、依滅、向於捨，乃至修正T 0200c09定，依遠離、依無欲、依滅、向於捨。」
佛說此T 0200c10經已，尊者阿難聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。
T 0200c11 SC 1Thus I have heard: One time, the Buddha was staying in Rājagṛha at a mountain valley monastery.
SC 2It was then that the Venerable Ānanda had this thought while alone in a quiet abode, “Half of the religious practice is good friends, good associates, and good followers …”
SC 3The Buddha told Ānanda, “The religious practice is entirely, fully, and purely good friends. What is the reason for that? It was because of good friends that I led sentient beings to cultivate right view by relying on seclusion, having no desire, cessation, and being oriented toward renunciation … to cultivate right samādhi by relying on seclusion, having no desire, cessation, and an orientation towards renunciation.”
SC 4After the Buddha spoke this sūtra, the monks who heard what the Buddha taught rejoiced and approved.
