Tôi nghe như vầy:
Một thời, Phật ở tại vườn Cấp cô độc, rừng cây Kỳ-đà, nước Xá-vệ. Bấy giờ, Thế Tôn nói với các Tỳ-kheo:
“Do có cái gì, do khởi cái gì, do hệ lụy cái gì, do đắm đuối cái gì, do thấy ngã nơi cái gì, mà nếu ngã, ngã sở, ngã mạn kết sử chưa khởi, thì khiến cho nó khởi; mà nếu ngã, ngã sở, ngã mạn kết sử đã khởi, thì khiến cho càng tăng trưởng rộng lớn thêm?”
Các Tỳ-kheo bạch Phật:
“Thế Tôn là gốc pháp, là con mắt pháp, là sở y của pháp. Cúi xin Thế Tôn nói rộng ra; các Tỳ-kheo sau khi nghe xong sẽ hoan hỷ vâng lời thực hành.”
(…) chi tiết như kinh trên (kinh 139), cho đến:
Phật nói kinh này xong, các Tỳ-kheo nghe những gì Đức Phật dạy, hoan hỷ phụng hành.
如是我聞：
一時，佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤T 0043a21獨園。
爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「何所有故，何所T 0043a22起？何所繫著，何所見我？未起我、我所、我慢T 0043a23繫著使起，已起我、我所、我慢繫著使重令增T 0043a24廣？」
諸比丘白佛：「世尊是法根、法眼、法依……」如T 0043a25是廣說，乃至……。
佛說此經已，諸比丘聞佛T 0043a26所說，歡喜奉行。
T 0043a27 Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
At that time the Blessed One said to the monks: “The existence of what is the cause, by clinging to what, by being fettered and attached to what, by seeing what as the self, do not yet arisen I-conceit andbeing fettered by attachment to a self and what belongs to a self arise, and already arisen I-conceit and being fettered by attachment to a self and what belongs to a self increase further?”
The monks said to the Buddha: “The Blessed One is the root of the Dharma, the eye of the Dharma, the foundation of the Dharma …” to be recited fully in the same way up to … when the Buddha had spoken this discourse, hearing what the Buddha had said the monks were delighted and received it respectfully.
