Tôi nghe như vầy:
Một thời, Phật ở tại vườn Cấp cô độc, rừng cây Kỳ-đà, nước Xá-vệ. Bấy giờ, Thế Tôn nói với các Tỳ-kheo:
“Nếu có các ngoại đạo xuất gia đến hỏi ngươi rằng, ‘A-nan, vì sao Thế Tôn dạy người tu các phạm hạnh.’ Được hỏi như vậy, nên đáp thế nào?”
Tôn giả A-nan bạch Phật:
“Bạch Thế Tôn, nếu có người ngoại đạo xuất gia đến hỏi con rằng, ‘A-nan, vì sao Thế Tôn dạy người tu các phạm hạnh?’ Thì con sẽ trả lời rằng, ‘Vì để đối với sắc, tu tập yểm ly, ly dục, diệt tạân, giải thoát, không sanh, nên Đức Thế Tôn dạy tu các phạm hạnh. Vì để đối với thọ, tưởng, hành, thức, tu tập yểm ly, ly dục, diệt tận, giải thoát, không sanh, nên dạy tu các phạm hạnh.’ Bạch Thế Tôn, nếu có người ngoại đạo xuất gia hỏi như vậy, thì con cũng sẽ đáp như vậy.”
Phật bảo Tôn giả A-nan:
“Lành thay! Lành thay! Nên đáp như vậy. Vì sao vậy? Thật vậy, Ta vì đối với sắc mà tu tập yểm ly, lìa dục, diệt tận, giải thoát, không sanh, nên dạy tu các phạm hạnh. Và vì đối với thọ, tưởng, hành, thức, tu tập yểm ly, ly dục, diệt tận, giải thoát, không sanh, nên dạy tu các phạm hạnh.”
Phật nói kinh này xong, các Tỳ-kheo nghe những gì Đức Phật dạy, hoan hỷ phụng hành.
如是我聞：
一時，佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤T 0012b11獨園。
爾時，世尊告尊者阿難曰：「若有諸外T 0012b12道出家來問汝言：『阿難！世尊何故教人修T 0012b13諸梵行？』如是問者，云何答乎？」
阿難白佛：T 0012b14「世尊！若外道出家來問我言：『阿難！世尊何T 0012b15故教人修諸梵行？』者，我當答言：『為於色T 0012b16修厭、離欲、滅盡、解脫、不生故，世尊教人T 0012b17修諸梵行；為於受、想、行、識，修厭、離欲、滅盡、T 0012b18解脫、不生故，教人修諸梵行。』世尊！若有T 0012b19外道出家作如是問者，我當作如是答。」
T 0012b20佛告阿難：「善哉！善哉！應如是答。所以者何？T 0012b21我實為於色修厭、離欲、滅盡、解脫、不生故，T 0012b22教人修諸梵行；於受、想、行、識，修厭、離欲、T 0012b23滅盡、解脫、不生故，教人修諸梵行。」
佛說此T 0012b24經已，尊者阿難聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。
T 0012b25 SC 1Thus I have heard: One time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Jeta’s Grove of Śrāvastī.
SC 2It was then that the Bhagavān addressed Venerable Ānanda, “Suppose some mendicants from another religion were to come and ask you, ‘Ānanda, why does the Bhagavān instruct people to cultivate religious practices?’ How would you answer someone who asks this?”
SC 3Ānanda told the Buddha, “If a mendicant from another religion were to come and asked me, ‘Ānanda, why does the Bhagavān instruct people to cultivate religious practices?’ I would answer: ‘The Bhagavān instructs people to cultivate religious practices so that they will cultivate disillusionment with form, part with desire for it, completely cease it, be freed from it, and for it not to arise. He instructs people to cultivate religious practices so that they will cultivate disillusionment with feeling … conception … volition … awareness, part with desire for it, completely cease it, be freed from it, and for it not to arise.’ Bhagavān, if a mendicant from another religion were to question me thus, I would answer them in this way.”
SC 4The Buddha told Ānanda, “Good, good! You should answer in this way. Why is that? I really do instruct people to cultivate religious practices so that they will cultivate disillusionment with form, part with desire for it, completely cease it, be freed from it, and for it not to arise. I instruct people to cultivate religious practices so that they will cultivate disillusionment with feeling … conception … volition … awareness, part with desire for it, completely cease it, be freed from it, and for it not to arise.”
SC 5After the Buddha spoke this sūtra, the monks who heard what the Buddha taught rejoiced and approved.
