Vua hỏi Na-tiên, "Một người khóc và rơi nước mắt khi cha mẹ qua đời, một người khác cũng than khóc và rơi nước mắt khi nghe giáo pháp của Đức Phật. Trong hai trường hợp này, có khác nhau không?"
Na-tiên đáp, "Người khóc vì cha mẹ là do chấp thủ, do nghĩ đến đau thương, sầu muộn và khổ đau. Loại sầu muộn này là sầu muộn của kẻ vô minh. Người khóc khi nghe Pháp của Đức Phật thì đầy lòng từ bi. Vì người ấy nghĩ đến nỗi khổ trong thế gian nên nước mắt tuôn ra. Người ấy sẽ đạt được công đức lớn lao.
"Hay thay, Na-tiên."
王復問那 T 0716b19先。人父母死時悲啼哭淚出。人有聞佛經。亦 T 0716b20復悲啼淚出。俱淚出寧有別異不。那先言人 T 0716b21有父母啼泣皆感思愛恩念愁憂苦痛。此曹 T 0716b22憂者愚癡憂耳。其有聞佛經道淚出者。皆有 T 0716b23慈哀之心。念世間勤苦。是故淚出。其得福甚 T 0716b24大。王言善哉。
The king asked Nāgasena, “A man cries and sheds tears on the death of his parents, another man also laments and sheds tears while listening to the teachings of the Buddha. In these two cases, are they different?”
Nāgasena replied, “He who weeps for his parents is due to his attachment, his thinking of his grief, sorrow and suffering. This kind of sorrow is the sorrow of the ignorant people. He who weeps while listening to the sermon of the Buddha is full of compassion. As he thinks of the sufferings in the world, so his tears come out. He would obtain the great merit.
“Excellent, Nāgasena.”
