SC 1Như vầy tôi nghe, một thời, Phật trú tại Xá-vệ quốc, Kỳ-đà Lâm, Cấp Cô Độc Viên.
SC 2Nhĩ thời, đại chúng Tỳ-kheo đắp y, trì bát, nhập thành khất thực. Có một Tỳ-kheo tân học, nhập thôn phi thời. Các Tỳ-kheo thấy Tỳ-kheo tân học ấy ở nhiều nơi, bèn nói với vị ấy: “Ông mới vào học, chưa biết giới luật. Ông làm gì giữa các gia đình cư sĩ?” Tỳ-kheo tân học nói với các Tỳ-kheo khác: “Các vị Trưởng lão đều đến các gia đình cư sĩ. Tại sao riêng tôi lại không được đến các gia đình cư sĩ?”
SC 3Bấy giờ các Tỳ-kheo, thọ thực xong, cất y bát, rửa chân, rồi đến chỗ Phật. Đảnh lễ dưới chân Phật, rồi ngồi sang một bên và bạch rằng: “Thế Tôn! Khi chúng con nhập thành khất thực, chúng con thấy một Tỳ-kheo tân học, nhập thôn phi thời. Chúng con nói với vị ấy: ‘Ông mới vào học, chưa biết giới luật. Tại sao ông lại nhập thôn phi thời?’ Vị ấy trả lời chúng con: ‘Các vị Tỳ-kheo Trưởng lão cũng đến các gia đình cư sĩ. Tại sao riêng tôi lại không được đến?’”
SC 4Nhĩ thời, Phật bảo các Tỳ-kheo: “Trong một khu rừng hoang vu, có một hồ nước lớn. Một số voi trưởng thành thường vào hồ, dùng vòi nhổ rễ sen mọc ở đó. Sau khi lắc, chúng rửa sạch trong nước rồi ăn. Thân thể chúng trở nên mập mạp, đầy đặn, và chúng trở nên vô cùng mạnh mẽ. Một số voi con cũng ăn rễ sen, nhưng không biết cách lắc và rửa sạch trong nước. Chúng ăn cả bùn, trở nên yếu ớt, gầy gò, không trở nên mạnh mẽ. Một số chết, một số gần chết.”
Nhĩ thời, Thế Tôn nói kệ rằng:
SC 5“Voi trưởng thành vào hồ /
Dùng vòi nhổ rễ sen,
Lắc rửa sạch bùn /
Rồi mới ăn.
SC 6Những Tỳ-kheo nào /
Tu tập Pháp vô nhiễm,
Khi khất thực /
Không nhiễm lỗi lầm nào.
Ta gọi họ là hành giả /
Giống như voi trưởng thành.
SC 7Ai không hiểu thiện xảo phương tiện /
Sau phải khổ vì lỗi lầm,
Chịu khổ đau phiền não sau này /
Giống như voi con.”
SC 8Các Tỳ-kheo, sau khi nghe lời Phật dạy, hoan hỷ và ghi nhớ kỹ.
如是我聞：
一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤T 0380c20獨園。爾時，眾多比丘著衣持鉢入城乞食。爾T 0380c21時，有一年少新學比丘，不以時節入於聚落。T 0380c22時，諸比丘處處見彼新學比丘，而語之言：「汝T 0380c23今新學，未知對治法門，云何處處經歷諸家？」T 0380c24新學比丘白諸比丘言：「大德諸長老等皆往T 0380c25諸家，云何遮我不至諸家？」
時，諸比丘乞食食T 0380c26已，收攝衣鉢，洗足已，往至佛所，頂禮佛足，在T 0380c27一面坐。諸比丘等白佛言：「世尊！我等入城乞T 0380c28食，見一年少新學比丘，不以時節，往至諸家。T 0380c29我等語言：『汝是新學，未知對治，何緣非時往T 0381a01至他家？』答我等言：『諸老比丘亦到諸家，何故T 0381a02獨自而遮我耶？』」
爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「大曠野T 0381a03中有一大池，有諸大象入彼池中，以鼻拔取T 0381a04池中藕根，淨抖擻已，用水洗之，然後乃食，T 0381a05身體肥盛，極得氣力。諸小象等亦復食藕，T 0381a06不知抖擻并及水洗，合埿出食，後轉羸T 0381a07瘦，無有氣力，若死若近死。」
爾時，世尊而說偈T 0381a08言：

「大象入池時， 以鼻拔藕根，T 0381a10
抖擻洗去泥， 然後方食之。T 0381a11
若有諸比丘， 具修清白法，T 0381a12
若受於利養， 無過能染著，T 0381a13
是名修行者， 猶如彼大象。T 0381a14
不善解方便， 後受於過患，T 0381a15
後受其苦惱， 如彼小象等。」
T 0381a16諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。

SC 1Thus have I heard, once, the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in the Jeta Grove, the Anāthapiṇḍika Park.
SC 2At that time a large group of monks put on their robes, took their begging-bowls and entered the town to beg for food. There was a young, newly ordained monk who entered the village at an inappropriate time. The monks noticed this young, newly ordained monk in several places and said to him: “You have just begun training and do not yet know the discipline. What are you doing among the families?” The newly ordained monk said to the other monks: “The venerable Elders all visit the families. Why should I be denied this and not visit the families?”
SC 3Then the monks, having eaten what they had received on their alms-round, put away their robes and begging-bowls, washed their feet, and went to the Buddha. Having paid homage at his feet, they sat to one side and said. Then they said to the Buddha: “World-honored One! When we entered the town to beg for food, we saw a young, newly ordained monk, who did not visit the families at the appropriate time. We said to him: ‘You have just begun training and do not yet know the discipline. Why do you visit the families at an inappropriate time?’ He answered us: ‘The elder monks as well have come to the families. Why should I alone be denied this?’”
SC 4At that time the Buddha said to the monks: “In a vast wilderness there was a large lake. A number of full-grown elephants used to enter the lake and with their trunks pull out the lotus roots that were growing there. After giving them a shake, they cleaned them in the water and ate them. Their bodies became fat and full, and they grew extremely strong. Some juvenile elephants also ate of the lotus roots, but did not know how to shake them and clean them in the water. They ate them together with the mud and became weak and thin, they did not grow strong. Some died, some almost died.”
At that time the World-honored One spoke a verse:
SC 5“When full-grown elephants enter a lake /
and pull out lotus roots with their trunks,
they shake them and wash off the mud /
and only then eat them.
SC 6Those monks who /
practice the unsullied Dhamma,
when receiving alms /
are not tainted by any fault.
Them I call practitioners /
who are like the full-grown elephants.
SC 7Those who do not well understand skillful means /
suffer later for their faults,
they suffer later pain and distress /
like the juvenile elephants.”
SC 8The monks, having listened to what the Buddha had said, were happy and remembered it well.
