如是我聞：
一時，佛在毘舍離獼猴彼岸T 0384b25大講堂中。有一離車，名摩訶離，來詣佛所，禮T 0384b26佛足已，在一面坐。白佛言：「世尊！頗曾見帝釋T 0384b27不？」佛言：「我見。」離車白佛言：「有夜叉鬼，狀似T 0384b28帝釋，世尊所見將無是彼夜叉鬼耶？」佛告離T 0384b29車：「是帝釋身，我善識之。夜叉之形如帝釋者，T 0384c01我亦識知。帝釋本行，及所行事，我亦盡知。帝T 0384c02釋本為人時，極孝順父母；敬於尊長；所言柔T 0384c03軟，斷於兩舌；除去慳嫉；常好布施；口常實T 0384c04語；除於瞋恚，不起嫌恨。」
爾時，世尊即說偈言：
T 0384c05「於父母所， 極能孝順， 於諸尊長，T 0384c06
深心恭敬， 恒作軟善， 恩柔好語，T 0384c07
斷於兩舌， 慳貪瞋恚。 三十三天，T 0384c08
各作是語： 『如是行者， 勝我等輩，T 0384c09
應當別住， 以為天王。』」
T 0384c10佛說是已，諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。
T 0384c11SC 1Thus have I heard, once, the Buddha was staying in the great hall on the shore of the Monkey-lake near Vesāli. There was a Licchavi, by the name of Mahāli, who came to the Buddha, paid homage to his feet and addressed him: “World-honored One, have you seen Sakka?”
The Buddha said: “I have seen him.”
SC 2The Licchavi addressed him: “There are yakkhas who look like Sakka. Might it be that the World-honored One saw such a yakkha instead?”
SC 3The Buddha told the Licchavi: “I am well acquainted with Sakka’s appearance. I also know that there are yakkhas who look like Sakka. I also fully know his deeds in previous lives. When Sakka was a human being, he was obedient to his parents, he respected his elders, his speech was gentle, without slander, he had done away with avarice, he always loved to give, he always spoke truthfully, he had done away with anger, and he did not give rise to hatred.”
At that time the Buddha spoke a verse:
SC 4“Whoever towards their parents /
displays filial obedience,
towards their elders /
heartfelt deep respect,
Always speaks in a manner gentle and friendly, /
kindly and good,
abandoning slander, /
greed, and hatred,
of such a one the thirty three gods /
have this to say:SC 5Such a practitioner /
is our better.
He should dwell apart /
as king of the gods.”
SC 6When the Buddha had finished, the monks, having listened to what he had said, were happy and remembered it well.
