Vi-n 1 Một thời Thế Tôn trú giữa dân chúng Magadha, tại điện thờ Manimàlaka, tại một trú xứ của Dạ-xoa Manibhadda.
Vi-n 2 Rồi Dạ-xoa Manibhadda đi đến Thế Tôn, sau khi đến, nói lên bài kệ này trước mặt Thế Tôn:
Lành thay, thường chánh niệm,
Nhờ niệm, lạc tăng trưởng.
Có niệm, mai đẹp hơn,
Hận thù được giải thoát.
Vi-n 3 (Thế Tôn):
Lành thay, thường chánh niệm,
Nhờ niệm, lạc tăng trưởng,
Có niệm, mai đẹp hơn,
Hận thù chưa giải thoát.
Với ai trọn ngày đêm,
Tâm ý lạc, bất hại,
Từ tâm mọi hữu tình,
Vị ấy không thù hận.
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā magadhesu viharati maṇimālike cetiye maṇibhaddassa yakkhassa bhavane.
Atha kho maṇibhaddo yakkho yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
“Satīmato sadā bhaddaṁ,
satimā sukhamedhati;
Satīmato suve seyyo,
verā ca parimuccatī”ti.
“Satīmato sadā bhaddaṁ,
satimā sukhamedhati;
Satīmato suve seyyo,
verā na parimuccati.
Yassa sabbamahorattaṁ,
ahiṁsāya rato mano;
Mettaṁso sabbabhūtesu,
veraṁ tassa na kenacī”ti.
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Magadhans at the Maṇimālika Shrine, the haunt of the native spirit Maṇibhadda.
Then the native spirit Maṇibhadda went up to the Buddha, and spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence:
“It’s always auspicious for the mindful;
the mindful prosper in happiness.
Each new day is better for the mindful,
and they are freed from enmity.”
“It’s always auspicious for the mindful;
the mindful prosper in happiness.
Each new day is better for the mindful,
but they’re not freed from enmity.
But someone whose mind delights in harmlessness,
all day and all night,
with love for all living creatures—
they have no enmity for anyone.”
