Vi-n 1 Ðứng một bên, Thiên tử Nandana nói bài kệ với Thế Tôn:
Con hỏi Gotama,
Bậc Ðại Giác toàn trí,
Con hỏi đấng Thế Tôn,
Với tri kiến vạn năng.
Người nào gọi trì giới?
Người nào gọi trí tuệ?
Người nào vượt sầu khổ?
Người nào chư Thiên lạy?
Vi-n 2 (Thế Tôn):
Ai hộ trì giới luật,
Trí tuệ, tâm tu trì,
Chú tâm, vui Thiền định,
Tâm tư trú chánh niệm,
Tất cả mọi sầu khổ,
Ðược trừ diệt, đoạn tận,
Các lậu hoặc tận trừ,
Sống với thân tối hậu,
Vị ấy gọi trì giới,
Vị ấy gọi trí tuệ,
Vị ấy vượt sầu khổ,
Vị ấy chư Thiên lạy.
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho nandano devaputto bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
“Pucchāmi taṁ gotama bhūripañña,
Anāvaṭaṁ bhagavato ñāṇadassanaṁ;
Kathaṁvidhaṁ sīlavantaṁ vadanti,
Kathaṁvidhaṁ paññavantaṁ vadanti;
Kathaṁvidho dukkhamaticca iriyati,
Kathaṁvidhaṁ devatā pūjayantī”ti.
“Yo sīlavā paññavā bhāvitatto,
Samāhito jhānarato satīmā;
Sabbassa sokā vigatā pahīnā,
Khīṇāsavo antimadehadhārī.
Tathāvidhaṁ sīlavantaṁ vadanti,
Tathāvidhaṁ paññavantaṁ vadanti;
Tathāvidho dukkhamaticca iriyati,
Tathāvidhaṁ devatā pūjayantī”ti.
Standing to one side, the godling Nandana addressed the Buddha in verse:
“I ask you, Gotama, whose wisdom is vast,
the Blessed One of unhindered knowledge and vision.
What sort do they call ethical?
What sort do they call wise?
What sort lives on after transcending suffering?
What sort is worshipped by the deities?”
“Someone who is ethical, wise, evolved,
becomes serene, loving absorption, mindful,
who’s gotten rid of and given up all sorrows,
with defilements ended, they bear their final body.
That sort they call ethical.
That sort they call wise.
That sort lives on after transcending suffering.
That sort is worshipped by the deities.”
