Vi-n 1 Một thời Thế Tôn trú ở Kosala, tại một làng Bà-la-môn tên là Ekasālā. Lúc bấy giờ, Thế Tôn xung quanh có đại chúng cư sĩ đoanh vây, đang thuyết pháp.
Vi-n 2 Rồi Ác ma suy nghĩ: “Sa-môn Gotama này, xung quanh có đại chúng cư sĩ đoanh vây, đang thuyết pháp. Vậy ta hãy đi đến Sa-môn Gotama và làm mờ mắt đại chúng này.”
Vi-n 3 Rồi Ác ma đi đến Thế Tôn; sau khi đến, nói lên bài kệ với Thế Tôn:
Thật không chút thích hợp,
Ðể Ngài giảng dạy người,
Giữa người thuận, kẻ nghịch,
Chớ hành nghề đứng giữa.
Vi-n 4 (Thế Tôn):
Với lòng từ, thương tưởng,
Bậc Giác Ngộ dạy người,
Giữa người thuận, kẻ nghịch,
Như Lai chơn giải thoát.
Vi-n 5 Rồi Ác ma biết được: “Thế Tôn đã biết ta … ” liền biến mất tại chỗ ấy.
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu viharati ekasālāyaṁ brāhmaṇagāme.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ deseti.
Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi:
“ayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ deseti.
Yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyā”ti.
Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
“Netaṁ tava patirūpaṁ,
yadaññamanusāsasi;
Anurodhavirodhesu,
mā sajjittho tadācaran”ti.
“Hitānukampī sambuddho,
yadaññamanusāsati;
Anurodhavirodhehi,
vippamutto tathāgato”ti.
Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ bhagavā, jānāti maṁ sugato”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.
SC 1On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Kosalans at the brahmin village of Ekasala. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was teaching the Dhamma surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.
SC 2Then it occurred to Mara the Evil One: “This ascetic Gotama is teaching the Dhamma while surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople. Let me approach the ascetic Gotama in order to confound them.”
SC 3Then Mara the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:
SC 4 “This is not suitable for you,
That you instruct others.
When so engaged don’t get caught
In attraction and repulsion.”
The Blessed One:
SC 5 “Compassionate for their welfare,
The Buddha instructs others.
The Tathagata is fully released
From attraction and repulsion.”
Then Mara the Evil One … disappeared right there.
